Using the windward stern line to leave the dock

We've talked about how to use the windward stern line to keep yourself in position when you're entering the dock, how using it by going fwd and keeping the helm to leeward will push the boat straight and upwind, so that you can fix the mooring lines even if the wind is pushing your bow downwind.

But you can also use this line, and the same sprining method, to CLEAR some space from the boat next to you, so

  1. Disconnect all leeward lines

  2. Engage fwd slowly and raise in stages

  3. Once tention is on the windward stern line - turn the helm to leeward.

  4. Once you've got enough space - TURN THE HELM BACK TO CENTER.

  5. ease out line and either let it hang in the water with awerness or if you've got the extra hands, use them to pull the line back.

  6. Clear from the other boats

  7. GREAT SUCCESS

Please don't forget to bring the helm back to center, if you'll keep it in leeward as soon as you start moving over the water you will smash on the leeward boats.

Try it before you fully believe me.

See you in the next post.
